Trey Visits Miami of Ohio
"The most beautiful college there ever was."
The first Barnabas stop for the 2008-09 school year was Miami of Ohio. If you spend more than half an hour with Miami students, you're likely to hear them quote Robert Frost when he called Miami, "the most beautiful college there ever was." The problem is…he might have been right. But even greater than the campus was the chance to see our students in their element. On a typical college visit, I set separate appointments with each of our students, but we had a wonderful problem in Oxford, Ohio, this year: All of our students wanted to hang out together! We had breakfast and dinner at the favorite local restaurants; I was given the grand campus tour (complete with seven tour guides), and I experienced the smells that only a boys' dorm could produce.
Needless to say, I spent the weekend in good company.
A big thanks goes from me to all the FPC parents who have given us on the youth staff a chance to develop relationships with your kids; and another big thanks goes to all the college students at Miami University who were willing to hang out with an old guy at college.

BJ Goes to College
4 days + 2 states + 4 colleges + 1000 miles + 28 students = 1 amazing trip!
Over the days of October 28-31, I had the chance to travel across part of the southeast region checking in with our college students. The opportunity to visit Samford, Auburn, Alabama, and Ole Miss was an eye-opening experience for this Midwesterner! I had the chance to visit with our students from First Presbyterian, checking on their college experiences, spiritual well-being, and overall mental sanity. I saw firsthand that I was in no way, shape or form still able to function on "college time." Two a.m. is rapid eye movement time, not open the books and start studying time. Students ranging from seniors to brand new freshman met up for a meal, walk or coffee as we played catch-up. It was an experience that I enjoyed thoroughly. What a blessing, seeing our kids!

Barnabas Trips Reaches our College Students
College is that time when we spread our own wings…
make a name for ourselves…get out from our parents' rules…freedom…fun!
…but after about a month or two when the novelty of "no rules" has begun to wear off, sometimes it's kind of nice to get a little reminder of where you came from and that you haven't been forgotten.
That's why we do Barnabas Trips.
Throughout the school year, we will make a point to visit as many of our college students as possible at as many universities as possible. By next May, we will have spent 8 road trips, 164 cups of coffee, 35 lunches, 2,300 miles and not a lot of sleep to let our kids know that just because they've moved away doesn't mean they've moved out of our community.
Last month, Mark DeVries and I visited some of our Northeast schools. In just under three days, we visited students from George Washington, Cornell, Syracuse, West Point, Vassar, Yale, Columbia and UVA. These are a few of the pictures from our students living and learning in the Northeast.
College is an incredible time, but not always an easy one. Please remember our college kids in your prayers.
Grace and peace,
Trey Wince
