The Christian Life: Journey in a Modern World
Room L-203
The Sunday morning adult class known as "The Christian Life: Journey in a Modern World" is the current form of a class which began back in the early 1980s under the leadership of Assoc. Pastor Steve Brown and Recreation Director Bill Key. It was "Contemporary Issues from a Christian Perspective" for many years. In October, 1995, Lonnie Stout was approved by the Session as the new discussion leader for the class, with Bill Key remaining as "class convener." Under Lonnie's leadership, the issues discussion format eventually moved more toward the study of whole books, mostly about Presbyterian and Reformed history and theology, and theology in general. In the 1996/97 school year, a book study class known as "Character and Christian Community," formerly led by Dr. Keith Meador and the Rev. Mark Diehl, blended itself into the "Contemporary Issues Class." With this merger, the resulting class went more and more into book studies, and away from short-term issues studies. In 2004, the Contemporary Issues Class took its current name, The Christian Life: Journey in a Modern World, under which it has retained its nature as a class which examines the classic elements of Christian theology, focusing especially on Presbyterian and Reformed understandings, and their impact on church life, polity, and the Christian life in general. Lonnie Stout is still the leader during the school year; summer classes feature guest leaders. Lonnie is an Elder, former Clerk of Session, and is the President, Chairman and CEO of J. Alexander's.
