Journey to Confirmation (grades 4-6)
Confirmation Class
Confirmation Class - 6th Grade

This is our sixth grade class which is designed to allow our confirmands time to explore their own thoughts about what it means to claim a personal relationship with Christ and take on the responsibilities of church membership.

To that end, the class time is structured to model relationships. The goal? As the sixth graders work with each other and a team of vulnerable and honest adults, they realize that faith is a journey and we're all on the road together. We check our other identities at the door and begin with an ice breaker. Everyone participates! Our 17 adults and 60 children are humbled when we remove our shoes or admit silly facts about ourselves. Thus we've revealed a little about who we are. In the large group lesson, the teacher shares the Word and exposes truth through Scripture and our Creeds, Confessions, and catechisms as well as contemporary example. The last third of class is small group time when year long carefully placed small groups explore faith, go deeper into the lesson, and get to know each other through prayer and thanksgiving. Each group of about eight students and two adults stays together the entire year.

In this format, we learn to test the waters of new relationships and give students the chance to see what Jesus was talking about! We explore the beliefs of the church together. Jesus enjoyed disciples. He knew we would have churches and need support in the critical world. This is our safe place to explore our faith. We learn we will need each other in the coming years and the church is where we can find adults who care about us at every turn.

The final groundwork is for the Confirmands to go on Retreat where they write a personal Statement of Faith.

By Confirmation Sunday, we know we may have questions, but we know the church is our family and we are not alone in our journey. Each Confirmands stands as a profession their own faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and are ready to begin the exciting life of service as full members of First Presbyterian Church.
