To Know Christ Through Education.
Children's Christian education at First Presbyterian Church begins with quality nursery care for infants and toddlers. A safe, loving environment welcomes the smallest child into the Family of God. Biblically based, Christ-centered educational classes for children age two through grade five are available each Sunday morning during the educational hour. A memory-work enrichment program is part of our elementary program of comprehensive Christian learning. Students in grade six spend a year in Confirmation studies, with a Biblical overview and studies of Presbyterianism—our history, creeds, beliefs and government. Students are received into full membership upon public profession of faith in mid-May of each year. Our teenagers meet for a brief assembly on Sunday morning and then move into six graded classes, which work through a systematic curriculum covering Biblical topics and current needs of the students. Children with special needs are welcomed into the Sunday School program. When necessary, these children are assigned "special friends" to attend class with them. Computers are part of the education program for third graders on Sundays.
Our adult Sunday morning program includes fourteen regular classes in a wide range of sizes, formats and content. Lay teachers and staff ministers lead all the classes except one that features Vanderbilt Divinity School professors, who rotate about every 4-5 weeks. Short-term elective classes are held periodically, such as parent-teen classes or expectant parents class. We are always open to beginning new classes. Our School of Christian Living is a Wednesday evening program held September through May. Five terms of four to seven weeks are held, each offering up to nine different classes for adults, including Bible studies and sessions on ethics, parenting, social issues, music, missions, aging, computers and others. These evenings are fun for the whole family and include supper for everyone. We offer educational and recreational activities for children, as well as nursery care.
Bible studies are held during the week at various times. Vacation Bible School and Family Retreat offer additional learning and fellowship opportunities during the summer. Periodic workshops and seminars round out our educational program. |
